In China, assessment of higher education institutions is the role of the central government. In particular, the Ministry of Education assesses the performance of every university in terms of its teaching and research performance. The China Alumni Association also undertakes to examine the employment prospects of different universities, and other elements of university performance. Such evaluation underlies an annual rankings system.

Within these rankings, humanities disciplines and science & engineering disciplines are treated separately when appropriate, in the same way the related university entrance exams are different. For some criteria, each university must report its own relevant data, and for others either the Ministry of Education or a third party organization collects the data. The rankings cited on the Sinograduate homepage are specifically produced by the China Alumni Society.

Sinograduate is not aware of any verification of the university assessment methodology, and has not sought to obtain an official methodology explanation in Chinese or English. As with all such rankings, most weight can arguably be placed on movements & changes in the tables across years in which the same methodology has been used.
